Workplace training
I work at Kurrajong Waratah which provides numerous training opportunities for people who want to work with people with disabilities.
When I first started working within its Skills Options program, I had three orientation sessions. The first was provided by my manager, who provided specific information relating to the job of Support Worker. Other managers conducted the second session, with our CEO speaking about the organisation and its vision for the future. The third training session included an orientation tour of the services that Kurrajong Waratah provide. This was great, as I only knew where a few services were and it was nice to have a visual picture of the whole thing.Since then, my manager (or Program Officer) has provided regular on-site training specific to the clients that use our service. I have also done a few courses out of work hours that have helped me support the skill development of clients in my work: from book making and bookbinding, to belly dancing and paper making. At the end of July, I will be doing components of Certificate III and IV in Disability. I'm quite excited that this training is being offered through work.
