Back in the carecareers team!

Rhonda Yanitsas

I've returned from maternity leave now and wow, it's definitely great to be back in the carecareers team!

While I very much enjoyed looking after our new arrival (Max), on a Full Time basis, I'm happy to be working on such a great project again too...all the while juggling my other roles as a mum, wife, daughter, friend and colleague.

Since I've been with carecareers I've seen it go from strength to strength. It's substantially increased its reach and improved on its success bit by bit.

While I was on leave so much was achieved, which is great news! There are even more people discovering the disability and community care sector as a rewarding career path, and many more employers are advertising with us.

Over the 2011 calendar year nearly 10,000 jobs were advertised on our website which was an increase of more than 111% from the previous year. And in 2011, 5,471 job seekers (to be exact!) registered with carecareers, which means 11,000 people are now registered with us.

Our team has expanded too. Our Project Manager, Mike, started mid last year and we have two additional Talent Officers, Lucy and Jen, who have joined our Irish friends, Patrick and Peter.

We also have two team members who are looking after the schools and university program which is called projectABLE. Jillian is the Marketing Coordinator for the project and Maeve is looking after the new digital components of projectABLE. Both have experience in the disability sector and are excited about encouraging students to consider the many and varied career opportunities within it.

As editor of carecareers my role is to look after the online side of carecareers, including the content on our website, this blog and our social media profiles, like Facebook and Twitter.

I do this so that you can learn about the sector and people with disability, search for jobs, share info and get involved; whether you're just discovering the sector, have been looking for a suitable job for a while, have been working in disability or community care for years, are searching for your own staff or are a client accessing a service.

carecareers is unique and we're all about recruiting people to work in the NSW disability and community care sector. We also want to share true insights into what it's all about so if you'd like to contribute please get in touch with me.

I'm looking forward to the exciting year ahead for carecareers and I'm definitely looking forward to watching our little Max grow, explore and laugh every day (just like he is in the photo below).

NDIS timetable brought forward

carecareers

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) could be implemented sooner than expected, after a decision from the first meeting of the COAG* Select Council on Disability Reform, chaired by Federal Ministers Wayne Swan and Jenny Macklin.

This means that the 'launch sites' (which are yet to be identified) originally planned for mid-2014, are now scheduled to start in mid-2013.

Certain reforms will be needed for the NDIS to work:

We welcome the new timetable for the NDIS, given the urgent need for disability services. But a concerted and coordinated effort will be required on many fronts to meet the timetable.

NDS** is developing a paper on equipping disability service providers for the NDIS. It will outline the implications of the NDIS (and associated reforms) for disability service providers, identify pressure points, document current resources and projects available to assist service providers and recommend actions to bridge the gap between what is available and what is needed. We’ll keep you updated with developments, and please let us know what you think.

Discussion of the implications of the NDIS for service providers and next steps will feature at NDS’s CEO Meeting on 5-6 December in Canberra.

* COAG = Council of Australian Governments (ie State and Commonwealth)
** NDS = National Disability Services (responsible for carecareeers)

Welcome to the new and improved carecareers!

carecareers

We're delighted to tell you that carecareers.com.au has just been upgraded and it’s now more user friendly and useful than ever before.

Since launching the site, more than 400,000 visitors have logged on to carecareers, with many job seekers going on to find a career in the care sector. Our ambition is to keep improving what we offer, to help put more people in more jobs right across the sector.

Over the next couple of days, all users will be able to see the new site. If it doesn't seem different straightaway, don't worry, this process just takes time!

So, what changes have we made to carecareers?

Here are just some of the improvements:

  • Our Jobs Page Search function has been amended, thanks to our users who alerted us to bugs!
  • Our 'Candidates' section, is now called 'Career Advice' because that's a better way to describe what you'll find there
  • If you want to post a comment or submit a story, you don't have to log in anymore; just use your Facebook or email account IDs
  • And every page has a new Header, which includes all the information you need to find quickly
  • We've made it easier to connect with others in the sector by removing the Community log in and forums. All discussions and conversations can now take place on True Stories and here, on the blog. It’s now easier to comment on the blog and share any useful information you find on the site.

Some things have stayed the same – but for good reasons:

One question you might be asking is: What happens to the information I supplied when I registered? We use it to help send you the information you need. In future, you'll be able to choose to receive newsletters from us, and check boxes will make it easy for you to tell us what kind of information you want to receive.

If it sounds a bit technical, it's not meant to! It's all part of improving what we offer you. So be sure to keep checking back to the carecareers website to find out about the latest jobs, career advice and resources available to you. And please contact our Talent Advisors if they can be of any help in your job or candidate search. Check out our revamped site, and please let us know what you think of it! We love feedback!
